I had never heard of this place before. Stumbled accross it looking for something the other day and thought it was interesting. Its a shame the buildings were allowed to deteriorate the way they have. You can tell they were magnificent buildings back in the day. There are some pictures of the boilers for the island 15 or so pictures into the site. They said they were to small and they had to ration the steam during the winter. They also generated their own electricity. Looking at where it is that land would be worth a lot of money if they sold it. It would have made a cool museum if it had been kept up. http://kingstonlounge.blogspot.com/2011/01/north-brother-island-riverside-hospital.html
Cool place to go visit. The architectural stuff, machinery, all of it, just would keep me there for days.
While I enjoyed the history and the pics were great I think it's time to clean it up and use the island for something we the tax payers own it and are not allowed to visit it.
Looks like there are a lot of hazards there just in the buildings and who knows what kind of chemical and other health hazards remain.
This was on yahoos front page yesterday, plug it into youtube, there are lots of clips etc about it, typhoid Mary died on that island.
used to have an abandoned place like that here growing up. needless to say, it was where the teenagers went after drinking too many beers. it was both interesting and creepy at the same time. I heard that a certain former teamster is buried on thi island....
a look to the past ...wow ....I'm glad to have been born later & not during the late 1890's..tough times they had...Thanks for sharing Tuna very informative , kinda creepy too !

Plum Island that is mentioned in the article has many buildings in the same condition or worse. The excuses I get for not removing / renovating them is $. Money needed to remove asbestos, lead, chemicals, ordinance, etc. I can’t post pics due to security reasons but Bing Maps has great satellite shots. Fort Terry is located center island South side. The bunkers from the late 1800 are still visible on the ease end. Bing Maps
