5 ton commercial package unit, my guy went there and the compressor was making one hell
    of a racket
rated 19 amps drawing 45 then off on internal
he went to install the new comp today I told him to blow the system with nitro
he said lots of oil came out
    uh oh
he installs and the unit runs fine for 20 minutes then goes off on high head
    700 psi
so I told him its either
    a) you did not get all the oil out and only half the coil is feeding
which means a restriction in the first place
    or
    b) the txv is bad or clogged
or c) the filter dryer is clogged
he starts the unit back up and it runs fine
    125 and 340 psi
so I told him that a txv is either good or bad, not intermittant
cut the filter dryer out and put straight pipe in
start it and tell me whats going on
he is doing that now but I wanted y'alls opinions

But what if there is moisture in the system and it froze the txv?? I've seen it before.

TXV's can be kind of bad, one time I had one that was doing what his is, finally changed the TXV, as I too believed what you do, there was a burr on one of the push rods in the txv and it would hang up on it every once in a while

Drier should always be replaced anytime the system is opened. Why wasn't it done in the first place?

Why on earth would you replace a compressor and not the drier, that's just plain stupid.

Only a few where I left the contactor. If it's a 70 amp and looks good I leave it but, usually, it gets a new one.

Save 15 minutes not changing the drier, waste 2 hours changing it anyway.

Sounds like the condenser was full of oil to me. A bad txv would make the suction pressure low, but would it make the head pressure that high? If you close the liquid service valve to pump down a split system the head pressure does not get real high. Maybe it would if you left it running. :headscratch:
